Runton, A. (2005). Owly: Just a Little Blue. Marietta, Ga.: Top Shelf.
Lexile Score: N/A
Summary:
This wordless, graphic novel follows the story of a
friendly bird who wants to help a little bird family out. After several
attempts to help nothing seems to be working the way Owly wanted it to work.
Finally after a long rainy night, Owly comes to the rescue and finally is able
to help the way he wants.
Evaluation:
Overall, I
would not say this book is of high quality literature. The images are nice, but
I don’t think they are very child friendly. The images are small and there are
quite a few images on a page, which is not idle if you are showing this book to
a class. Some of the images are also misleading and the children might not be
able to fully understand what is going on in each frame.
Although I do not think this book is of high quality
literature, I do think this book could be a great creative thinking tool by the
images. Because there are no words and some unless you look at all the pictures
you will not understand what is going on, thus creating a great way to promote
creative writing.
Literary Elements:
Text: there are no words in
this book
Characters: Owly, Bird,
Butterfly, Caterpillar
Genre: Graphic Novel
Mini Lesson:
For this book
I would have students pick a page and write a story about that image. I would
have students write about what happened before the image, what is happening in
the image, and what happens after the image. I would use this book for free
writes and for also getting students to think creatively.
