Big Plans By Bob Shea & Lane Smith

Citation:
Shea, B., & Smith, L. (2008). Big Plans. New York, NY: Hyperion Books for Children.

Lexile Score:  N/A

Summary:
This story is about a little boy who has big plans and he wants the world to know he has big plans. The little boy, and a bird, set out on a journey to insure that everyone knows what they have. On their journey they go everywhere from the president to the moon!

Evaluation:
Overall I would say this is of high quality text. The way the words are written in the book is creative and imaginary. Some pages have huge words written in different styles while other pages have simple writing at the bottom of the page. No matter how the writing is on the page, it is eye-popping and will definitely keep children involved in the story just by the text and illustrations.
The illustrations in this book are wonderful. They are cartoonish of the real world setting. They are very detailed and definitely capture exactly what the little boy is doing. The illustrations also take up almost the entire page during the whole boy.
This action packed adventure book is wonderfully decorated with illustrations that children will love, along with an easy-to-follow storyline that is very child friendly.

Literary Elements:
Characters: Little boy and the bird
Genre: Picture Book
Tone: Excitement, proud

Mini Lesson:
In the story they never reveal what the child’s plans are; they just say he has big plans. Since the book never said I would have students write about what they think the boy’s big plans are.
