Lexile Score: n/a
Summary:
This story follows the daily schedule of a girl who
lives in India. The story talks about what life is like in India as well common
tourist attractions. The book is also written in Hindu and has a Hindu glossary
in the back.
Evaluation:
Overall I feel
this book is not of high quality. I felt like the story was trying to
incorporate too many things at once that would confuse children. The storyline
itself was filled with many stereotypes from how people live to what people
look like. Everything in the book is exactly how most stereotypes are for
India.
The illustrations in the book were even worse than
the storyline. The pictures looked a bit hazy and were did not look pleasing.
Half the picture looked like a basic drawing while the other half looked also
realistic. All the pictures did was accommodate the horrible writing and plot
of the story.
Literary Elements:
Setting: India- in a hotel,
school, the streets, and the movie theater.
Character: Mila-India girl
Mini Lesson:
The only lesson I would teach with this book is the importance
to incorporate more than one language when writing stories and to always show
the importance of every language. I would show how this book had the same words
written in both English and Hindu and explain why that is important.
