Mouse: A Toon Book. New York: Candlewich Press.
Lexile Score: N/A
Summary:
This story is about a mouse and boy who go on an
adventure. During the entire adventure the only thing the mouse wants to do is
go home. The boy on the other hand keeps going to new places, promising soon
their journey will be over. After many travels all around the world, the mouse
and the boy end their journey, promising to go on another.
Evaluation:
Overall this
book is definitely of high quality. The storyline is an adventure, which
children like. The places the characters go are also interesting and will
capture children’s attention. The book also doesn’t contain any stereotypes or
racial opinions.
The images in the book are also wonderful. They are
cartoonish in a beginning graphic novel which is a great starter book to read
before full graphic novels. The images also continue the story further in depth
with detail. The images of the book will
keep and maintain children’s attention better than anything else.
Literary Elements:
Text: Written in beginning graphic
form
Characters: Mouse and Boy
Theme: Exploring new things
Mini Lesson:
For this book I
would have students create their own adventure book. Each student in the class
would create a place for the characters to go. The students would then describe
what the characters will do at that place.
